Our Wilderness Heart
Developed through the Aldo & Leonardo science and wilderness residencies that celebrated 50 years of the Wilderness Act, a month was spent in the John Muir Wilderness region of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Working with the High Sierra Rangers, this project evolved out of an eight day trek into the wilderness to support the rangers on their mission. Realizing that wilderness was more about romance than science, I collected love poems about trees, wildflowers and the mountains from the rangers that were then burned into chunks of wood. These eloquently charred scraps of wood surrounded an installation representing the breakdown of trees into topsoil, into wildflowers, the mountains' love poetry back to us.
